SUGAR is a very commonly used ingredient in processed foods. The food industry likes it because besides adding the sweat taste, it serves as a preservative and many other commercial functions. It adds value for the food producers but not value to the food for customers.


Look at the ingredients listing and see where sugar appears. If it is listed amongst the top few items, it shows that a lot of sugar is likely to be added. The ingredient list shows the ingredient used in a descending order.


Sugar appears in our foods with many names and in many forms. Listed below are the different “names” for sugar:



  • Glucose
  • Fructose
  • Lactose
  • Maltose
  • Invert sugar
  • Sucrose
  • Glucose syrup
  • Maple syrup
  • Brown sugar
  • Honey
  • Raw sugar
  • Molasses
  • Black treacle
  • Golden Syrup

  • Sorbitol
